Accident Reporting

In the 50 years that Urban Insurance has been in business, we have never spoken to a single customer that was “Happy” to have just been involved in an accident. The truth is accidents happen to even the best of drivers. When an accident does occur you need to remain calm, collect the needed information and make a timely report.

The first thing to do upon being involved in a car accident is to gain your composure. This might seem easy or even unimportant, but it is a critical step in resolving the situation and getting your car repaired quickly. I will say what should be understood, “Things can be replaced- people can not”. Job one is to assess if any one in your vehicle is hurt. Having the presence to ask, as well as to look for your self can save lives. Remember, today few of us walk out our door without a phone, if someone in your car need medical help call 911. If you believe injuries are “Borderline;” error on the side of caution and call for help. Clearly the next step is to see if anyone in the other car or truck needs help. Don’t forget they call them “Accidents” for a reason. Keep your anger in check. There will be plenty of time to point fingers, first make sure no one is in need of medical help. Please take all reasonable steps to avoid further damage to person and or property by moving cars off to the side of the road and out of harms way.

The second step is to obtain all of the information you will need to report the loss to both Urban Insurance Agency, as well as to the police. Urban sent you an accident report card to be completed. We do not require that actual card be used, but it is a great tool to use. If you do not have the card, try to picture the likely questions we will ask when you contact us. Begin with the most obvious, Name, Address, Phone number and Work Number all fall into the category of being able to reach this person. Next move to their insurance information. Remember to ask for the name of the company as well as the name of the office or agency, and get the corresponding phone numbers for each. Clearly it is wise to mark down information on the vehicle(s) in the crash. I already reminded you that you will likely have a phone, and odd are that phone will have a camera. Not only can a “Picture be worth a thousand words,” but the photo will give a more objective account.

Report any accident promptly to both Urban Insurance, as well as to the police. Today, most police departments will not send out an officer to the scene unless there are injuries. However a report must be filed; that puts the job on you, the driver. If you fail to file a “Crash report,” this can result in your license being suspended or revoked. Also remember, if you fail to file a report but the driver of the other auto does- only that person’s account of the event will be recorded. Please do not forget to report the accident in to Urban. The sooner the loss is reported the sooner we can help you get your car fixed or replaced. If you wait too long you can put your coverage in jeopardy.

Over the past 50 years that Urban Insurance has helped tens of thousands of our customers solve the problems caused by accidents. None of our customers enjoy being involved in an accident, but we do find that they “Are Happy” that they were insured by Urban Insurance.

Lowest car insurance rates

Does it seem like every other commercial is for Car Insurance? At first, I thought maybe the fact that I sell Car Insurance left me “Hyper-aware” of Auto Insurance commercials, but it is not my imagination; auto insurance advertising has skyrocketed from $600 million in 2003 to more than $1.7 billion in 2007. Insurance companies spending has continued to increase throughout 2008 and again in 2009. In fact last year Geico alone spent more advertising car Insurance, than the total industry spent in 2003. State Farm and Allstate have dramatically increased Spending over the past year unwilling to give up market share to Progressive and Geico.

The result of all of this spending is a public that is watching and endless string of commercials from a dozen car insurance companies, each claiming to be some $500 cheaper than any other company. As a log-time agent selling car insurance, two things are quite clear:

1. Consumers are paying for all that advertising through higher Car Insurance rates.

2. Every company can't be the cheapest insurance company.

It should come as no surprise, that if an insurance company spends hundreds of millions of dollars per year on advertising, millions more vanity sponsorships, plus millions of dollars in executive bonuses- those costs will get passed down to consumers.
At Urban Auto Insurance, there are no marble floors and certainly no seven figure salaries. Our lower overhead is passed on to policy holders through lower rates.

I am always amazed by insurance companies claims that their policies will save people an average of over $400; because, At Urban insurance the average cost of a policy is only $426.
Clearly “Average savings” are based on only those customers who switched to company “X” and then reported that they saved money. Customers who got a quote from company ”X” and found the rate higher, and did not change carriers or switched but didn't save money are not counted when compiling their average.

Urban Auto Insurance has been helping customers save money on their Illinois car insurance and Indiana car insurance for more than 45 years. We represent 20 different car insurance companies in order to find you the lowest price on your auto insurance. Unlike many car insurance companies today Urban will provide you Auto Insurance without “Running your Credit”, this can save you hundreds of dollars on your insurance.

42,642 died in car accidents

No one wants to think about it, but our roads can be dangerous places. Even for those who use the greatest care, can have errors in judgment, and or make mistakes. No matter how well, or carefully you drive; there is always the risk of being hit be a driver not sharing your caution.

42,642 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2006. The Institute publishes statistical facts about the motor vehicle safety picture in 2006, the most recent year for which fatality data are available. Fatality Facts are updated once a year, when the US Department of Transportation releases data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

The idea is not to send you out onto the roads terrified, but to remind you of the seriousness required each time you get behind the wheel.

Historic Drop in Highway deaths

Thursday, August 14, 2008
Press Release:
DOT 113-08 Contact: Brian Turmail
Tel.: (202) 366-4570
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters Announces Historic Drop in Highway Fatalities and Rate Motorcycle fatalities still rising, Secretary Peters says, while announcing increased safety, drunk driving outreach and enforcement efforts
WASHINGTON – The number of people who died on the nation’s roads dropped again last year, reaching historically low levels, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters announced today. Secretary Peters said that in 2007, the overall number of traffic fatalities fell to 41,059, the lowest number since 1994. In addition, the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was 1.37, the lowest fatality rate on record, she noted. The Secretary added that 2.49 million people were injured in highway crashes last year, the lowest seen since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began collecting injury data in 1988.
“Thanks to safer vehicles, aggressive law enforcement and our efforts, countless families were spared the devastating news that a loved one was not coming home last year,” Secretary Peters said. “You can be sure that we’re not stopping here, the quest is not over until that bottom line number is zero.”
She noted, for example, that motorcycle safety continues to be a problem. Motorcycle fatalities now account for 13 percent of all fatalities and, in 2007 alone, the number of motorcycle riders or passengers killed on the nation’s roads increased 6.6 percent over the previous year, the Secretary said.
To address these challenges, Secretary Peters announced the launch of new advertisements that focus on motorcycle safety and drunk driving. They can be viewed at http://www.stopimpaireddriving.org/planners/crackdown2008/planner/index.cfm
Tomorrow, the Department will kick off its annual impaired driving enforcement crackdown called, “Drunk Driving. Over the limit. Under Arrest.” The effort runs through Labor Day. During today’s announcement, made outside of the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District headquarters, Secretary Peters viewed a motorcycle safety demonstration.Secretary Peters added that the Department will continue its efforts to combat impaired driving, increase safety belt use and improve motorcycle safety.“As these new statistics show, we are making progress, but far too many of our friends, neighbors and family members are still getting killed or seriously injured,” Secretary Peters said.

Storm Damage in the Midwest

or a more likely response.

Oh S#!T, There’s a Tree on my Car.

by Larry Lubell

Walking home last last night, I could see the sky was getting darker, signaling a major storm was clearly in the offing. Luckily I was barely in the house before the drops began falling.

by 10:00pm the storm's arrival was announced by both the National Weather Service Warning as well as by a sky "Lit" by lightning. The very quantity and brilliance trumpeted that this storm would leave it's calling cards long after it departed.

These Severe thunderstorms moved across the Midwest during the late night, ripping roofs from buildings, sending people to shelter and leaving thousands of homes and businesses in the dark.

These storms set off tornado warnings for downtown Chicago, resulting in Fans being evacuated from the stands at Chicago's Wrigley Field, and travelers from the upper levels of terminals and planes at O'Hare International Airport.

Walking to work the today, I noticed the number of trees that had either completely fallen, or had one or more large branches that separated from the trunk.

First, It is critical that you approach this situation with great care.
Trees or large branches are very heavy. A branch that is partly separated from the rest of the tree, are unstable, and if you are not careful you can get crushed. If the branch is on your car, keep in mind your car might be the only thing holding it up.

The tree might have a “Power line” tangled within the leaves, unlike in a “Tom and Jerry cartoon”, a shock from a downed power line can result in death or life changing injuries. There are many stories of a homeowner taking a power saw to downed tree only to accidentally cut into a live wire.
There are things that are best left to those with the expertise and equipment needed to do the job safely.
If a tree damages you auto, it is a good idea to snap a picture of the tree resting on your car. Understand that if the storm damaged your car, it is likely that insurance adjusters will be quite busy with many other claims.

Tree damage to your car is covered under the Comprehensive part of your car insurance policy.

Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan Roommates in Jail?

There are no shortage of parents dismayed by the plethora of poor “Role models” popular couture parades in- front of our kids each day. From the sports star accused of rape, to the Hip Hop performer arrested on weapons charges or assault. Recently it seems that a week does not go by with out some celebrity being arrested for Drunk Driving (DUI).

In recent months MEL GIBSON, Tracy Morgan, Ty Pennington, Busta Rhymes and Mike Tyson all managed to get arrested on DUI charges. Lane Garrison has just been charged with vehicular manslaughter, after a December fatal car crash in Beverly Hills left one of his three teenage passengers dead.

There seems to be a new trend, with young woman celebrities behaving as bad or worse, than their male counterparts. With the woman, there appears to be less violence, but a greater degree out self-destruction. Despite being super-rich powerful, beautiful and famous, many of these young stars are absolute “Train Wrecks”. From drug arrests, to being caught in “Home sex tapes”, they seem unable to go a month without taking some step further down the road toward personal disaster. Take a look at a few of the current headlines:

Lindsay Lohan has reportedly decided to check back into rehab
after a holiday weekend in which she was booked on suspicion of DUI after crashing her car in Los Angeles
Coke Found in Lohan DUI Investigation

·

Brandy the Grammy-winning R&B artist, maybe Up For Manslaughter Charge After Death Crash
"Laguna Beach" star Jessica Smith has just been released from an Orange County jail, after being charged with two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence....

Paris' shrink claims that Hilton is "emotionally distraught and traumatized" from the May 4 hearing where she was sentenced to 45 days in jail for breaking probation in her DUI bust

Anneliese van der Pol, co star of the Disney hit series "That's So Raven" has pleaded no contest to DUI after being arrested for driving with a staggeringly high .19 blood-alcohol level.

Nicole Richie, Nicole was spotted once again driving through L.A., just a few weeks after her 2nd DUI arrest.

California law, requires a mandatory sentence of five consecutive days in county jail as well as a one year license suspension for anyone twice-convicted of DUI .If Richie is convicted of DUI as a result of Monday's arrest, the judge must impose a jail sentence.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2004, 16,694 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes. With statistics like that, it is imposable not to take the reckless actions of these stars seriously.
Alcohol-related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every two minutes (NHTSA 2006).Occurrence and Consequences
There are serious consequences for being convicted of DUI. Those can include, loss of driving privileges, large fines, you will end up needing an SR22 insurance policy, and just possibly jail time.
Here at urban insurance Agency, we have been helping people get the insurance they need to comply with the secretary of State’s requirements, and get their license back. We have many companies that provide SR-22 insurance; so we can get you insured at the lowest rates. But remember most states are tightening up their rules and increasing the penalties for those caught drinking and driving.
PLEASE, for the safety of all on the road. DO Not Drink and Drive.

When it comes to driving, do not let Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan, be your role model.

What is an SR22 Filing?

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

By Larry Lubell

SR22 is actually the name of the form used by insurance companies to notify the state that an insured has the required liability insurance coverage. An SR22 Filing is needed to removes a suspension order placed by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office on your driving privilege.

Why won’t any liability policy work?

While it is true that an sr22 is a basic liability policy, the filing mandates that the insurance company will notify the Illinois Secretary of State by issuing a 30-day notice should the insurance ever lapse for any reason. It is the fact that the insurance company is legally bound to provides this notice a to the Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles that sets in SR22 policy apart.

How do I know if I Need an “SR-22”

The most common way , would be by receiving a notice from the secretary of states office . They will send a letter demanding sr22 to the same address that is printed on your drivers license. The letter will state the reason that the SR-22 form is required and how long you must carry the filing. It is also likely that a judge will notifiy you at the time of your hearing.
How do I know when I no longer need sr22?

You will be sent a letter from the DMV (Department of motor Vehicles) stateing that you have completed your obligation. It is a great idea to keep a copy of that letter, believe or not, the “State” is not incapable of errors. We have had clients who had completed their required SR22, that months later were pulled over by an offcer only to find that the “State” still showed their license suspended. Yes, we have seen people spend the night in jail because of a mess up in Springfield. Keep copies of what the DMV sends you, and make sure your insurance agent also gets a copy.

If I get an sr22 insurance policy, can I start with a down payment or do I need to pay the whole year at once?

At Urban Auto Insurance Agency, you never need to pay for the policy all at once. We can start your coverage with just a small downpayment and then you can make monthly payments. Because U.I.P.P.(U.I. Payment Plan) is a division of Urban Auto Insurance Agency, we have the flexablity to offer you much lower down payments and easier monthly payments.

Do insurance companies charge more money because I need an SR22?

None of the companies we use Charge more for providing an sr22. the cost of the policy is the same as providing you with a base liablity policy. An insurance company can, and often will, charge a surcharge based on your MVR, but we will not charge your more for the SR22 form.

Do you offer SR-22s to someone that does not own a car?

Yes. Fill out the request a quote form and we will provide you with a quote to get your insurance started.

Can I buy Multiple policies?

It is time to add my 16 year-old son to our auto insurance policy. Our current insurance provider quoted us $3,050/yr on top of the$2,200 we pay for our 3 cars/2 driver scenario. Our $5,250/yr policywould look like this:Car 1: Honda Civic, primary driver = male over 25, 15K mi/yrCar 2: BMW 318, primary driver = female over 25, 15K mi/yrCar 3: Chevy Impala, primary driver = male under 25, 5K mi/yrCar 4: Chevy Suburban, recreational only, 5K mi/yrIn our research we have discovered that having a 2-car/3-driver policywhere the boy is a part-time driver saves a ton of money. My questionis this, if we were to buy 2-car/3-driver policies from two differentinsurance providers, would we be opening ourselves up for issues whenit comes time to file a claim on one of the cars?It would be like this:
>From GEICO we would buy a policy:

Car 1: BMW 318, primary driver = female over 25, 15K mi/yrCar 2: Chevy Impala, primary driver = male under 25, 5K mi/yr16 year-old son is part time driver on either car
>From AmFam we would buy a policy:

Car 1: Honda Civic, primary driver = male over 25, 15K mi/yrCar 2: Chevy Suburban, primary driver = female over 25, 5K mi/yr16 year-old son is part time driver on either carCould I get away with this? I know I would save $$ on premiums. Whatdo you think?–JB

How Much Car Insurance Do I Really Need?

By Larry Lubell
Think you’re paying too much for car insurance?
Today we are all looking for ways to save money, but driving with out auto insurance is irresponsible, as well as illegal in most states. Today, even small accidents can result in thousands of dollars in damages.

Due to the high price of vehicles, ever-increasing medical costs, and new bankruptcy laws which make it even more difficult to eliminate your debits; it is financial suicide to drive with out insurance.

When looking for car insurance, no one wants to pay more than they have to in order to get the needed coverage. The question is How Much Car Insurance Do I Really Need?

Below are some suggestions to help you lower your insurance costs.

First you have to understand the basics of Car Insurance.
If you have a new car and or a car that is being financed, you are going to need to get COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE & COLLISION, that’s the Portion of an auto insurance policy that covers damage to the policyholder’s car whether from a collision with another car, or damage from fire, explosions, earthquakes, floods, and riots), and theft. This will need to be purchased along with Liability Insurance. Because your insurance company might be obligated to replace or repair your car in the event of a loss, the year, make and model of the car will have a major impact on the cost of the Car Insurance. Clearly, an insurance company would rather layout the money to replace a seven-year-old Dodge Neon, then a new $450,000 Porsche Carrera GT.

If you have an older car or a car that is not being financed, you can select to purchase just Liability Only.
LIABILITY INSURANCE covers what the policyholder is legally obligated to pay because of bodily injury or property damage caused to another person, to specified limits. A liability only policy will cost less than buying full coverage.
When one purchases Liability Insurance you have the option to select different Limits. It is important to understand that the LIMITS OF LIABILITY state the Maximum amount of money that the insurance company will pay for a covered loss. For auto insurance In Illinois the requirements are $20,000 per person Bodily injury /$40,000 Total per accident bodily injury /$15,000 Property damage. In Indiana they are $25,000 per person Bodily injury /$50,000 Total per accident bodily injury /$10,000 Property damage.
It is important to understand that a person can always sue you for more money than is covered under your insurance policy- it for that reason that I suggest carefully evaluating your financial exposure. If you have little or no assets, and you have an accident for which you were covered, it is unlikely that the judge will award damages in excess of your coverage. If however you manage a Hedge Fund, and own a three million dollar home, and large sums of liquid assets, it would be financially irresponsible to be driving around with State minimums.

So the question is How Much Car Insurance Do I Really Need is dependant on your own personal finances. Please feel free to call Urban Insurance at 800-680-0707 to speak to an agent.

If one is involved in a motor vehicle accident, found guilty, there is a high likelihood that a court can find one financially responsible. This is why car insurance is so important. Without auto insurance you can be held personally accountable for any damages, which a court finds you liable. The law states that the Secretary of State shall suspend the driver’s license of anyone who failed for 30 days to pay his or her judgment. If the debtor fails to pay any installments, their driver’s license will be revoked along with the items necessary for driving legally, such as the city sticker, license plates, and the registration card for the vehicle. These laws are found under the Safety Responsibility Laws of Illinois. Once a “Judgment” is placed on your record the suspension remains in effect until:1. The person who owes the judgment pays the money owed in full, or an agreed upon negotiated compromise 2. an installment payment agreement order has been reached between the judgment debtor and judgment creditor. A breach of that agreement will cause a re-suspension of the driving privileges.3. the person who owes the judgment, files a petition for relief under the federal bankruptcy code pursuant to Chapter 7.To Reinstate Your License, You Must Do One Of The Following:

Installment Agreement Order
You can craft a contract with the plaintiff’s attorney to pay the judgment in monthly payments. The arrangement must be certified by the court in the county of jurisdiction and submitted to the Secretary of State. Keep in mind; if you fail to make all the payments on time, your license will be re-suspended. Obtain a court order agreeing to pay the judgment in installments and submit this installment agreement order with a court stamp or seal to the Secretary of State’s office at 160 North LaSalle on the 10th Floor Obtain SR22 Insurance. After paying the full amount, make sure you receive a certified, file-stamped copy of a “Satisfaction of Judgment” form. Bring this form to the Secretary of State at 160 North LaSalle Street located on the 10th Floor.
