In the 50 years that Urban Insurance has been in business, we have never spoken to a single customer that was “Happy” to have just been involved in an accident. The truth is accidents happen to even the best of drivers. When an accident does occur you need to remain calm, collect the needed information and make a timely report.

The first thing to do upon being involved in a car accident is to gain your composure. This might seem easy or even unimportant, but it is a critical step in resolving the situation and getting your car repaired quickly. I will say what should be understood, “Things can be replaced- people can not”. Job one is to assess if any one in your vehicle is hurt. Having the presence to ask, as well as to look for your self can save lives. Remember, today few of us walk out our door without a phone, if someone in your car need medical help call 911. If you believe injuries are “Borderline;” error on the side of caution and call for help. Clearly the next step is to see if anyone in the other car or truck needs help. Don’t forget they call them “Accidents” for a reason. Keep your anger in check. There will be plenty of time to point fingers, first make sure no one is in need of medical help. Please take all reasonable steps to avoid further damage to person and or property by moving cars off to the side of the road and out of harms way.

The second step is to obtain all of the information you will need to report the loss to both Urban Insurance Agency, as well as to the police. Urban sent you an accident report card to be completed. We do not require that actual card be used, but it is a great tool to use. If you do not have the card, try to picture the likely questions we will ask when you contact us. Begin with the most obvious, Name, Address, Phone number and Work Number all fall into the category of being able to reach this person. Next move to their insurance information. Remember to ask for the name of the company as well as the name of the office or agency, and get the corresponding phone numbers for each. Clearly it is wise to mark down information on the vehicle(s) in the crash. I already reminded you that you will likely have a phone, and odd are that phone will have a camera. Not only can a “Picture be worth a thousand words,” but the photo will give a more objective account.

Report any accident promptly to both Urban Insurance, as well as to the police. Today, most police departments will not send out an officer to the scene unless there are injuries. However a report must be filed; that puts the job on you, the driver. If you fail to file a “Crash report,” this can result in your license being suspended or revoked. Also remember, if you fail to file a report but the driver of the other auto does- only that person’s account of the event will be recorded. Please do not forget to report the accident in to Urban. The sooner the loss is reported the sooner we can help you get your car fixed or replaced. If you wait too long you can put your coverage in jeopardy.

Does it seem like every other commercial is for Car Insurance? At first, I thought maybe the fact that I sell Car Insurance left me “Hyper-aware” of Auto Insurance commercials, but it is not my imagination; auto insurance advertising has skyrocketed from $600 million in 2003 to more than $1.7 billion in 2007. Insurance companies spending has continued to increase throughout 2008 and again in 2009. In fact last year Geico alone spent more advertising car Insurance, than the total industry spent in 2003. State Farm and Allstate have dramatically increased Spending over the past year unwilling to give up market share to Progressive and Geico.

The result of all of this spending is a public that is watching and endless string of commercials from a dozen car insurance companies, each claiming to be some $500 cheaper than any other company. As a log-time agent selling car insurance, two things are quite clear:

1. Consumers are paying for all that advertising through higher Car Insurance rates.

2. Every company can't be the cheapest insurance company.

It should come as no surprise, that if an insurance company spends hundreds of millions of dollars per year on advertising, millions more vanity sponsorships, plus millions of dollars in executive bonuses- those costs will get passed down to consumers.

Urban Insurance has specialized in writing SR-22 policies for the past 4 decades.

SR22 is actually the name of the form used by insurance companies to notify the state that an insured has the required insurance coverage. People will sometime refer this car insurance as SR-22, or FR Filing or sometimes as just “Filing” insurance. While insurance is mandatory in Illinois, most drivers are not required to purchase SR22 insurance. If you are required to file an SR22 then an insurance company must submit the form in order to remove a suspension order placed by the Illinois Secretary of State's office on your driving privileges. The reason for the filing is to provide a certification to the Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles that your insurance company has issued a policy of at least the required minimum liability coverage, and that your insurance company will notify the Illinois Secretary of State should the insurance ever lapse for any reason.
People whose license is under suspension by the Illinois Department of Motor vehicles need an SR22 Filing to reinstate their license. The are a variety of reason that you might be required to show proof of SR-22 filing, they include: drunk driving violations (DWI); suspensions from unpaid fines or parking violations; having an accident without car insurance; or having your license suspended for failing the emissions test.
In Order To Reinstate Your License, You Must Do One Of The Following:
If the cause of the SR22 is a “Judgment” you must either pay the full amount of the judgment or obtain a court order agreeing to pay the judgment in installments to the plaintiff’s attorney or the Clerk of the Cook County Circuit Court. It is important that you make sure you receive a certified, file-stamped copy of a “Satisfaction of Judgment” form. Take this form to the Secretary of State’s office at 160 North LaSalle Street located on the 10th Floor.
If the cause of the SR22 is due to unpaid tickets, you must take care of the underlying problem. Contact the appropriate Circuit Court and ask them to reopen the case or pay the outstanding tickets. If the cause of the SR22 is due to vehicle emissions, you must take your car back to a vehicle emissions testing facility and this time pass the test or Prove you no longer own the car.
Acquire SR22 Insurance from an insurance agency. You must sustain this insurance for 3 years without lapse or cancellation If Due to a judgment, DUI, felony or any other reason other than just being caught without insurance. If the only problem was Driving without Insurance, then you must maintain the insurance for one year without lapse or cancellation. You will also have a reinstatement fee of $70.00

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters Announces Historic Drop in Highway Fatalities and Rate Motorcycle fatalities still rising, Secretary Peters says, while announcing increased safety, drunk driving outreach and enforcement efforts
WASHINGTON – The number of people who died on the nation’s roads dropped again last year, reaching historically low levels, U.S. Transportation Secretary Mary E. Peters announced today. Secretary Peters said that in 2007, the overall number of traffic fatalities fell to 41,059, the lowest number since 1994. In addition, the fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled was 1.37, the lowest fatality rate on record, she noted. The Secretary added that 2.49 million people were injured in highway crashes last year, the lowest seen since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began collecting injury data in 1988.
“Thanks to safer vehicles, aggressive law enforcement and our efforts, countless families were spared the devastating news that a loved one was not coming home last year,” Secretary Peters said. “You can be sure that we’re not stopping here, the quest is not over until that bottom line number is zero.”
She noted, for example, that motorcycle safety continues to be a problem. Motorcycle fatalities now account for 13 percent of all fatalities and, in 2007 alone, the number of motorcycle riders or passengers killed on the nation’s roads increased 6.6 percent over the previous year, the Secretary said.

Tomorrow, the Department will kick off its annual impaired driving enforcement crackdown called, “Drunk Driving. Over the limit. Under Arrest.” The effort runs through Labor Day. Metropolitan Police Department’s Second District headquarters, Secretary Peters viewed a motorcycle safety demonstration.Secretary Peters added that the Department will continue its efforts to combat impaired driving, increase safety belt use and improve motorcycle safety.“As these new statistics show, we are making progress, but far too many of our friends, neighbors and family members are still getting killed or seriously injured,” Secretary Peters said.

Oh S#!T, There’s a Tree on my Car.

Walking home last last night, I could see the sky was getting darker, signaling a major storm was clearly in the offing. Luckily I was barely in the house before the drops began falling.

by 10:00pm the storm's arrival was announced by both the National Weather Service Warning as well as by a sky "Lit" by lightning. The very quantity and brilliance trumpeted that this storm would leave it's calling cards long after it departed.

These Severe thunderstorms moved across the Midwest during the late night, ripping roofs from buildings, sending people to shelter and leaving thousands of homes and businesses in the dark.

These storms set off tornado warnings for downtown Chicago, resulting in Fans being evacuated from the stands at Chicago's Wrigley Field, and travelers from the upper levels of terminals and planes at O'Hare International Airport.

Walking to work the today, I noticed the number of trees that had either completely fallen, or had one or more large branches that separated from the trunk.

First, It is critical that you approach this situation with great care.
Trees or large branches are very heavy. A branch that is partly separated from the rest of the tree, are unstable, and if you are not careful you can get crushed. If the branch is on your car, keep in mind your car might be the only thing holding it up.

The tree might have a “Power line” tangled within the leaves, unlike in a “Tom and Jerry cartoon”, a shock from a downed power line can result in death or life changing injuries. There are many stories of a homeowner taking a power saw to downed tree only to accidentally cut into a live wire.
There are things that are best left to those with the expertise and equipment needed to do the job safely.
If a tree damages you auto, it is a good idea to snap a picture of the tree resting on your car. Understand that if the storm damaged your car, it is likely that insurance adjusters will be quite busy with many other claims.

Why do I need SR-22?

I went to court in Hammond because I was caught driving without Proof Of Insurance. The judge told me I needed to show proof of SR22; what is an SR22.

SR-22is actually the name of the form used by insurance companies to notify the state that an insured has the required insurance coverage. As a result people will often refer this type of car insurance as SR-22, or FR Filing. The law in Indiana states the following: When a motorist's operator license is suspended upon conviction of a major offense, that driver must submit proof of insurance to the BMV before being reinstated. This filing provides that the driver has an auto liability policy in effect that cannot be canceled without prior notice. A valid SR-22 Proof of Insurance form must be filed with the BMV for three years after the end of the suspension. If the BMV receives a cancellation notice or does not have a current SR-22 form on file at any time during the three-year period after reinstatement, the motorist's driving privileges will become suspended again.
This is why it is critical that you find an insurance agency that is equipped to issue Same - Day SR22 Insurance. If you are required to file an SR22, then your insurance company must submit the correct form in order to remove a suspension order placed by the Indiana Secretary of State's office. The filing is needed to provide a certificate to the Indiana Department of Motor Vehicles that your insurance company has issued a policy of at least the required minimum liability coverage, and that your insurance company will notify the Indiana Secretary of State»s office should the insurance ever lapse for any reason.

Driving without car insurance not only puts your assets in jeopardy, but it also illegal and can leave you subject to fines. A motorist who operates a vehicle without an automobile liability insurance policy is subject to a 90-day driver license suspension or a one-year suspension if it is a repeat violation within a three-year period. In order to obtain a reinstatement of the license, the motorist must pay a reinstatement fee of $150, $225, or $300 depending on whether it is a first, second, third or subsequent offense, and provide current proof of insurance signed by an agent or representative of the insurance company. SR22 is actually the name of the form used by insurance companies to notify the state that an insured has the required "certificate of compliance" of proper insurance coverage. When a motorist receives a "certificate of compliance notice," he (or she) must find an insurance agency that is equipped to issue the needed SR-22 insurance, and to file the certificate to the BMV within 40 days. Failure to return the "Certificate of compliance" to the Indiana Secretary of State»s office, as required will result in a license suspension

One of the headlines in the business section today was:
Winnebago Industries Inc. said Friday its third quarter profit skidded 73 percent.
The article goes on to detail how their Sales fell almost 40 percent to $139.7 million from $231.7 million a year ago.

What a SHOCK!
Winnebago is having a difficult time selling $50,000 - $280,000 RVs that get 3 miles per gallon at a time of $4.50 gas and a slow economy.
Truth is, you got to give them credit for getting up out of bed each morning, going down to the dealership and giving it their best shot.
Between the price of gas, Insurance, up-keep, as well as paying the monthly payment. it seems like quite a difficult expense to justify. Add all of the cost associated with a large RV and divide by the number of days used and You could stay in a suite at the Four Seasons for less per night.
That is a difficult sell!

The biggest difficulty for Winnebago is that this is not a temporary problem. The days of $2.00 Gas are gone. I have not read a report that indicates a likelihood that we will even return to $3.00 gas. Also it is hard to design a 38 foot long, 12 foot wide vehicle with a 30,000 lbs gvw, that gets 30 miles per gallon. Fact is, it is difficult to see an economic climate that helps the RV industry any time soon.
Winnebago's are made in Forest City, IA recently announced a strategic decision to idle production at the Company's Charles City Manufacturing Facility, effective August 1, 2008
That manufacturing consolidation will cost 190 people their jobs. It is sad to see good manufacturing jobs disappear; so I wish Winnebago all the luck in the world. By all accounts they build a fine product, and have a name associated with quality. It is difficult to run a business in the best of times, but when world events conspire against you, it is especially hard.

Motorcycles, the answer to $4.00 Gas?

For an ever increasing number of people, the answer is yes.
The $100 fill-up has arrived in the United States.

No more than a few years ago if someone would have told you that a fill-up could run upwards of $100; you would have laughed loudly to their face. No ones laughing now.

The national average for regular unleaded is $3.53 and rising daily. Last year at this time, people were complaining that it was $2.86 per gallon. According to AAA, 24 states and the District of Columbia are averaging at or above $3.50 a gallon for regular unleaded.Premium, which is required for many cars and SUVs can run 40 to 60 cents higher. Once again, California is home to the nation's highest average gas prices.

Mandatory Insurance Driver's License Suspension

Beginning July 1, 2007, individuals convicted of driving without liability insurance under 625 ILCS 5/3-707 will lose their driving privileges for a minimum of three months. The suspension will be extended for an additional six months, if the individual is convicted of a second offense while the first offense remains in effect. The law, Public Act 91-1035, requires that a $100 reinstatement fee be paid to the State prior to license reinstatement. The law does not allow any driving permit during the course of this suspension.

2008 Safest Cars

When I was a child, the speed limit was 65, cars did not have shoulder straps and no one heard of a "Car seat". It was not at all strange to see a child in the front seat.

How times have changed. From anti-lock brakes to air bags; we have all become aware of the dangers associated with driving. More than any other organization, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, has been a constant voice pushing for safer vehicles.

The car makers now all recognize that a bad safety report from the Insurance Institute will dramatically impact sales of that model. This is a perfect example of the marketplace stimulating better products. Below is the latest winners from Insurance Institute

2008 winners of Top Safety Pick award —

Thirty-four vehicles earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Top Safety Pick award for 2008. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting people in front, side, and rear crashes based on ratings in the Institute's tests. Winners also have to be equipped with electronic stability control (ESC), which research shows can significantly reduce the risk of crashing.
Compared with last year, automakers have more than doubled the number of vehicles that meet criteria for Top Safety Pick. At the beginning of the 2007 model year, 13 models qualified, but as manufacturers have made changes and introduced new and safer vehicle designs, 10 additional vehicles qualified during the year. Now another 11 vehicles are being added to the list for 2008. Designating winners based on the tests makes it easier for consumers to identify vehicles that afford the best overall protection without sifting through multiple sets of comparative crash test results.
"For 2008, consumers have the widest selection of vehicles they've ever had that afford the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes," says Institute president Adrian Lund. Front and side impacts are the most common kinds of fatal crashes, killing nearly 25,000 of the 31,000 vehicle occupants who died in 2005. Rear-end crashes usually aren't fatal, but they result in a large proportion of the injuries that occur in crashes. About 60 percent of insurance injury claims in 2002 reported minor neck sprains and strains.

All current car and minivan models, small and midsize SUVs, and small and large pickup trucks are eligible to win Top Safety Pick. Eight vehicles from Ford and its subsidiary, Volvo, make the list of winners for 2008. Seven winners are from Honda and its subsidiary, Acura.
Winners have features that help avoid crashes: The Institute added a crash prevention criterion last year to earn Top Safety Pick. Winning vehicles have to be equipped with ESC, which can help drivers avoid crashes altogether. ESC is a control system comprised of sensors and a microcomputer that continuously monitors how well a vehicle responds to a driver's steering input and selectively applies the vehicle brakes and modulates engine power to keep the vehicle traveling along the path indicated by the steering wheel position. This technology helps prevent sideways skidding and loss of control that can lead to rollovers. ESC can help drivers maintain control during emergency maneuvers when their vehicles otherwise might spin out.

"Vehicles should be designed to provide good occupant protection when crashes occur, but now with ESC we have the possibility of preventing many crashes altogether," Lund says.
"If all vehicles were equipped with ESC, as many as 10,000 fatal crashes could be avoided each year."
Institute research indicates that ESC reduces the risk of fatal single-vehicle crashes by 56 percent and fatal multiple-vehicle crashes by 32 percent. Many single-vehicle crashes involve rolling over, and ESC reduces the risk of fatal single-vehicle rollovers by 80 percent (SUVs) and 77 percent (cars).
For first time pickups are eligible: Pickup trucks haven't been eligible to win Top Safety Pick until now because the Institute hadn't begun side testing them. The Toyota Tundra is first to qualify. Pickups aren't as likely as cars or SUVs to have side airbags or ESC, and Toyota has made these features standard in the Tundra.
"Pickups are among the top selling vehicles in the United States," Lund points out. "They're also more likely than in the past to be used as family vehicles, so equipping them with the latest safety features is important."
Protection in rear impacts improves: Crash tests have driven major improvements in the designs of all kinds and sizes of passenger vehicles. The Institute began frontal crash tests for consumer information in 1995. Side tests were added in 2003 and rear tests in 2004. Most vehicles now earn good ratings in the frontal test, but significant differences still are apparent in vehicle performance in side and rear tests.
Some manufacturers have been working to improve the ratings of their vehicles in the rear test. For example, the seat/head restraints in the Honda Accord, Element, and Odyssey as well as the BMW X3 and X5 are rated good compared with previous designs that were rated marginal or poor. Audi improved the design of seat/head restraints in the A3 from acceptable to good. Another 23 vehicles would have won 2008 awards if they had good seat/head restraint designs. Toyota could have claimed 10 more awards, including 3 for Lexus models. Nissan and Volkswagen could have picked up 4 awards apiece.
Another area where safety is improving is occupant protection in side impacts. More 2008 model vehicles include as standard equipment side airbags designed to protect people's heads. The Saturn was side tested twice. In the first test, the side curtain airbag didn't deploy properly, and the head of the dummy positioned in the back seat was struck by the sill of the window in the door. This impact didn't produce high head injury measures, but head protection was inadequate. In response, General Motors redesigned the side curtain airbag to ensure more rapid inflation and better coverage of the airbag next to the dummy's head. In the second test, the fix was successful, and the VUE's side rating improved from acceptable to good. Top Safety Pick applies to VUEs built after December 2007.

Each year, the Institute offers to test Top Safety Pick candidates early in the model year. The policy is for manufacturers to reimburse the Institute for the cost of vehicles if the tests aren't part of the group's regular schedule. Top Safety Pick is presented by vehicle size because size and weight are closely related, and both influence how well occupants will be protected in serious crashes. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford better protection in crashes than smaller, lighter ones.
How the vehicles are evaluated: The Institute's frontal crashworthiness evaluations are based on results of frontal offset crash tests at 40 mph. Each vehicle's overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion into the occupant compartment, injury measures from a Hybrid III dummy in the driver seat, and analysis of slow-motion film to assess how well the restraint system controlled dummy movement during the test.

Each vehicle's overall side evaluation is based on performance in a crash test in which the side of the vehicle is struck by a barrier moving at 31 mph that represents the front end of a pickup or SUV. Ratings reflect injury measures recorded on two instrumented SID-IIs dummies, assessment of head protection countermeasures, and the vehicle's structural performance during the impact. Injury measures obtained from the two dummies, one in the driver seat and the other in the back seat behind the driver, are used to determine the likelihood that a driver and/or passenger in a real-world crash would have sustained serious injury. The movements and contacts of the dummies' heads during the crash also are evaluated. Structural performance is based on measurements indicating the amount of B-pillar intrusion into the occupant compartment.

Rear crash protection is rated according to a two-step procedure. Starting points for the ratings are measurements of head restraint geometry — the height of a restraint and its horizontal distance behind the back of the head of an average-size man. Seats with good or acceptable restraint geometry are tested dynamically using a dummy that measures forces on the neck. This test simulates a collision in which a stationary vehicle is struck in the rear at 20 mph. Seats without good or acceptable geometry are rated poor overall because they can't be positioned to protect many people

10 Ways to Increase Your Gas Mileage

The war in Iraq, Conflict in Turkey, Anger in Iran, coupled with the growing demand from China, have come together to cause Oil prices to surge to a new record of $89 a barrel. This is more than four times the prices we were paying in the year 2000. While we can hope that successful conclusions to world crises will reduce oil prices (Not to mention- peace) but due to world demand it is unlikely we will see prices drop below $60 a barrel; so the days of $2.00 gas are over.
Owning and maintaining a car has never been cheap. And, gas is one of the biggest, of those expenses. With gas prices at all time highs, this has never been truer. Clearly we have seen a trend away from larger SUVs, but for most of us, we are stuck with the Vehicle we have for the next few years. But you can still save gas and money on your current ride if you follow the following tips:
1. Check your tire pressure. This might not seem an obvious factor in fuel consumption, however, Under inflated tires are the number one cause of avoidable fuel loss.

2. Keep brakes in shape. Try riding your bike while even lightly pressing on one of the brakes- it does not make for a fun trip. That gives you an idea of what a misaligned or stuck parking brake can do to your fuel efficiency,

3. Check your Wheel alignment. , unbalanced wheels can play a role in mileage

4. Use the right gasoline. Most cars today are designed to run on regular gas. Check your owner’s manual. If premium fuel is "Required", plan on biting the bullet, but if the manufacturer only recommends premium, you may be able to get by with a lower grade.“If it’s "Recommended", you may have an option to go to a lower grade fuel -- although there will be some trade off there if you’re saving a ton of money in the process”.
5. Change your oil and filter regularly to avoid dirt causing additional friction in your engine.
The time your car burns the most fuel is while it's "warming up". Heat not only puts wear on your engine, but the energy that is used to cause the extra heat is energy not available to move the car forward. Try using the lightest oil recommended in your owner's manual.
6. Check your spark plugs. One misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel mileage by as much as 30 percent!
7. Check your air filter . A dirty filter will rob your car of performance and fuel economy So check every time you change your oil
8. Watch out for wind resistance. There is a reason auto makers spend millions testing cars in wind-tunnels, bike racks, stuff stacked up and tied down to your roof roof will increase wind resistance and negatively impact mileage.
9. Use air conditioning wisely. The drag caused by open windows when driving over 50 mph is greater than the energy required to run the air conditioner. So you can get the most fuel efficiency by using the A/C on the highway, However rolling down the windows will help fuel economy at slow speeds.
10. Be a smart driver. Stop and start driving really burns fuel. So, do your best to keep it at a minimum. For example, if you have cruise control, use it to keep highway speeds as steady as possible. Shift manual transmissions into neutral before stopping. And, if you can, consider changing driving routes to avoid excessive stopping and idling.

As of 01/01/09 those found Guilty of DUI must install a breath-testing device in their car.
Governor Rod Blagojevich signed Legislation that cracks down on drunk drivers, and aims to prevent those convicted of DUI from even being able to start their car before passing blood alcohol level test.
The new law was the result of a joint effort of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), working with Secretary of State Jesse White, and the legislation's sponsors: Senator John Cullerton (D-Chicago) and Representative Robert Molaro (D-Chicago).
The law requires all first-time DUI offenders who wish to obtain driving relief during the period of statutory summary suspension to install on their vehicles a breath alcohol ignition interlock device (BAIID). Motorists are required to blow into the BAIID, which measures their blood alcohol content levels.
"This is a new and innovative approach to deal with a very serious traffic safety issue," said Secretary White. "Statistics show breath alcohol ignition interlock devices are very effective in preventing subsequent DUI offenses. As Secretary of State, my office will continue to do everything within its power to make the roads of Illinois as safe as possible."

"We will not tolerate drunk drivers on our streets," Blagojevich said.

Safe teen drivers will gradually see their driving restrictions ease as they move from one stage to the next under GDL. Parental involvement is a critical component of any successful GDL program.Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for people age 15 to 20. Several recent studies concluded comprehensive GDL programs reduce teen traffic fatalities.White has also initiated new legislation (SB 172) that would strengthen Illinois' GDL program and enhance the safety of young, novice drivers. Motorists are required to blow into the BAIID, which measures their blood alcohol content levels. The device is designed to prevent DUI offenders from driving after having consumed alcohol.
"This is a new and innovative approach to deal with a very serious traffic safety issue," said Secretary White. "Statistics show breath alcohol ignition interlock devices are very effective in preventing subsequent DUI offenses. As Secretary of State, my office will continue to do everything within its power to make the roads of Illinois as safe as possible."
New Mexico implemented a similar law nearly two years ago and experienced in the first year a 12 percent reduction in alcohol related-fatalities. Moreover, studies show BAIIDs are effective in reducing subsequent offenses by up to 90 percent while on the vehicle.
"This is one of the most important pieces of DUI legislation passed in Illinois in several years because ignition interlocks stop vehicles from being driven by those who are drunk," said Glynn Birch, national president of MADD. "Illinois continues to raise the bar for other states. MADD applauds the state of Illinois for protecting its motorists from the dangers of drunk driving."
The law also increases the length of the statutory summary suspension from three months to six months for those offenders that failed the breath alcohol test at time of arrest and from six months to 12 months for those offenders that refused the breath alcohol test at time of arrest.
In addition, the law eliminates Judicial Driving Permits (JDPs) for first-time DUI offenders, and instead requires those offenders who wish to drive to install the BAIID before driving relief is granted. DUI offenders will be monitored during the entire time the BAIID is installed in their vehicles.
DUI offenders who cause death, great bodily harm, are under age 18 or have a prior conviction of reckless homicide are ineligible for driving relief.
"I would like to commend MADD for this initiative," said White. "They are working to enact similar legislation throughout the country in an effort to prevent the senseless tragedies caused by drunk driving."
The law goes into effect January 1, 2009.

His wife, Jill Krementz confirmed that Mr. Vonnegut died as the result of irreversible brain injuries stemming from a fall several weeks ago.

Born in Germany, Kurt Vonnegut lived through the firebombing of Dresden, Germany by the Allied forces in 1945 while he was a young prisoner of war. Many of his writings address or were clearly shaped by those events.
Vonnegut wrote, “The firebombing of Dresden, was a work of art”. “a tower of smoke and flame to commemorate the rage and heartbreak of so many who had had their lives warped or ruined by the indescribable greed and vanity and cruelty of Germany.”

As an avid reader of Vonnegut’s work, I understand him to be a man of empathy and compassion, that despised Hitler and all that the Nazi’s represented. However at the same time he watched in horror as Thousands of his neighbors were killed in the raids, many of them burned to death.

He came to understand and write about how in war it is the Innocents that pay the price for the greed and obsessions of the leaders. A lesson as relevant today in Iraq and Iran as was in the 40's in Germany.

SR22 is actually the name of the form used by insurance companies to notify the state that an insured has the required liability insurance coverage. An SR22 Filing is needed to removes a suspension order placed by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office on your driving privilege.

Why won’t any liability policy work?

While it is true that an sr22 is a basic liability policy, the filing mandates that the insurance company will notify the Illinois Secretary of State by issuing a 30-day notice should the insurance ever lapse for any reason. It is the fact that the insurance company is legally bound to provides this notice a to the Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles that sets in SR22 policy apart.

How do I know if I Need an “SR-22”

The most common way , would be by receiving a notice from the secretary of states office . They will send a letter demanding sr22 to the same address that is printed on your drivers license. The letter will state the reason that the SR-22 form is required and how long you must carry the filing. It is also likely that a judge will notifiy you at the time of your hearing.
How do I know when I no longer need sr22?

You will be sent a letter from the DMV (Department of motor Vehicles) stateing that you have completed your obligation. It is a great idea to keep a copy of that letter, believe or not, the “State” is not incapable of errors. We have had clients who had completed their required SR22, that months later were pulled over by an offcer only to find that the “State” still showed their license suspended. Yes, we have seen people spend the night in jail because of a mess up in Springfield. Keep copies of what the DMV sends you, and make sure your insurance agent also gets a copy.

State Farm States No New Policies in MississippiWednesday

State Farm Insurance Company anounced that it. is suspending sales of any new commercial or homeowner policies in Mississippi starting Friday. A company official said that the wave of litigation it has faced since Hurricane Katrina, was the main reason. Mississippi’s “current legal and political environment is simply untenable. We’re just not in a position to accept any additional risk in this homeowners’ market.” said Mike Fernandez, vice president of public affairs for State Farm State Farm has argued that their homeowner policies were worded to cover damage from wind but not from water - even if hurricane-force winds were the cause of the rising water. They also state that their policies exclude damage that could have been caused by a combination of both wind and water. Hundreds of State Farm policyholders have challenged that claim, saying they were “Sold” Hurricane policies and storm surge is a part of a hurricane, and they are therefore entitled to Compensation. In the case of Norman and Genevieve Broussard VS State Farm a jury awarded the Broussard’s $2.5 million in punitive damages against State Farm for refusing to cover Hurricane Katrina storm surge damage to their Biloxi home. U.S. District Judge L.T. Senter Jr. later reduced the award to $1 million, even though the judge found that State Farm acted in a “grossly negligent way” by denying the claim filed by policyholders.

If one is involved in a motor vehicle accident, found guilty, there is a high likelihood that a court can find one financially responsible. This is why car insurance is so important. Without auto insurance you can be held personally accountable for any damages, which a court finds you liable. The law states that the Secretary of State shall suspend the driver’s license of anyone who failed for 30 days to pay his or her judgment. If the debtor fails to pay any installments, their driver’s license will be revoked along with the items necessary for driving legally, such as the city sticker, license plates, and the registration card for the vehicle. These laws are found under the Safety Responsibility Laws of Illinois. Once a “Judgment” is placed on your record the suspension remains in effect until:1. The person who owes the judgment pays the money owed in full, or an agreed upon negotiated compromise 2. an installment payment agreement order has been reached between the judgment debtor and judgment creditor. You can craft a contract with the plaintiff’s attorney to pay the judgment in monthly payments. The arrangement must be certified by the court in the county of jurisdiction and submitted to the Secretary of State. Obtain a court order agreeing to pay the judgment in installments and submit this installment agreement order with a court stamp or seal to the Secretary of State’s office at 160 North LaSalle on the 10th Floor Obtain SR22 Insurance. Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Insurance Credit Score Cases

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case on insurers’ use of credit reports to affect the rates consumers pay for their insurance. Many insurance companies, including Geico, Progressive, Allstate and Ensurance use credit scoring as a factor in the price they charge for their insurance. A bad credit score can have a larger impact on the price you pay for insurance than multiple tickets. Many consumers are unaware of just how large the impact can be on the price they pay Delaware Insurance Commissioner Matt Denn has taken arguments against insurance industry use of credit scoring to the U.S. Supreme Court, filing a brief in a pending case involving the practice.Denn recruited 12 other state insurance commissioners to join Delaware in filing the brief.Denn’s amicus curiae, or “friend of the court,” brief was filed last Monday with the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. in the cases of Safeco v. Burr and GEICO v. Edo.The brief urges the Supreme Court to uphold the decisions of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in the Safeco and GEICO cases that the companies willfully disregarded the FCRA by not sending adverse action notices to some consumers.Consumers in the cases claim that insurance companies Safeco and GEICO violated the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. The consumers said that when a consumer’s credit information resulted in the consumer receiving a higher rate, insurers should have sent out “adverse action notices” required under FCRA and acted in “willful” disregard of the FCRA in not doing so.. ”I will continue to support legislation that would prohibit the use of credit scoring in auto and homeowners insurance, but I also thought it important to weigh in on this case,” Denn said. “As long as our law allows insurance companies to use credit scoring, consumers deserve to know when something in their credit score has resulted in them getting higher rates.”Safeco Insurance Co. of America, GEICO General Insurance Co., disagree that they should have notified people about adverse information in their credit reports.

Thursday, a jury on awarded $2.5 million in punitive damages to Norman and Genevieve Broussard a couple who sued State Farm Fire & Casualty Co. for denying their claim after Hurricane Katrina. This decision could assist hundreds of other homeowners in their attempts to force insurers to cover billions of dollars in storm damage. U.S. District Judge L.T. Senter’s earlier rulings in other Katrina cases have favored the insurance industry, but this decision goes to the heart of the objection companies have use to refuse to cover billions of dollars in damage from Katrina’s storm surge. After he explained his ruling, Senter ordered a recess to give attorneys time “to get over the shock.” After the jury announced its award, the Broussards left the courthouse arm in arm. “It’s a great day for South Mississippi,” Norman Broussard said.
The Broussards claimed that a tornado during the hurricane destroyed their home. State Farm blamed all the damage on Katrina’s storm surge.
State Farm and other insurers say their homeowner policies are written to cover damage from wind but not from water. That flooding and storm surge are excluded as part of homeowners policy even though those policies were sold as covering Hurricanes, even if hurricane-force winds preceded a storm’s rising water. In fact, after State Farm and other companies writing property insurance in Florida, suffered catastrophic losses after Hurricane Andrew, they dramatically altered the terms of their polices. In addition to increasing deductibles, they divided up the destructive force of a hurricane into two parts. One is wind, which is covered, and second is the water surge, which is not. It is for this reason that immediately after Katrina you heard Insurance companies talking about the “Great Flood of 2005.” Flood insurance is offered on a separate policy. Property coverage can be tricky, since there are often exclusions that might not always seem obvious or intuitive. It is always a good idea to review your coverage with an insurance professional.
The judge ruled that State Farm couldn’t prove that Katrina’s storm surge was responsible for all of the damage to the Broussards’ home. The judge also said the testimony failed to establish how much damage was caused by wind and how much resulted from storm surge.
State Farm spokesman Phil Supple said after the jury’s verdict that the company is likely to appeal the decision. “We are surprised and disappointed by both the judge’s ruling on the coverage issues and the amount awarded by the jury for punitive damages,” he said in a written statement. “We believe the expert testimony supported a different result.”
